There's No Place Like Home

2008

San Diego, California - I trotted down to San Diego in October for a fairytale wedding and luxurious weekend on the coast. My friend Rebecca was marrying her true love, Nick. There was something glamourous about the whole weekend. I don't get to experience glamourous very often, so it was a real treat!

2007

Thanksgiving in Vermont - Before I started my cancer treatments, I decided to go visit one of my oldest and dearest friends, Marilyn, at her home in Vermont. She invited me for Thanksgiving. It was a wonderful trip. I hadn't realized how much I was missing her until we were together again. The whole week nourished me in ways I couldn't even begin to describe.

Tucson, Arizona - I don't consider myself a desert sort of girl, but I spent my time in Tucson awed by the scenery, the plants and the people. I was there to attend the wedding of my dear friend, Kate, who has finally found her true love after several decades of looking. It was a very happy occasion! And it was great to hang out, be girly, charm rattlesnakes and eat amazing burritos with Kate and Julie.

2004

Victoria, B.C., Canada - I hopped on a ferry along with my friends Melanie and Kate to go across the Puget Sound for a weekend in Victoria, BC. We had a blast both exploring the city and the treasures of Egypt at the Royal BC Museum.
Amalfi Coast, Italy - My best buddy, Jeff, and I traveled to the Amalfi Coast in June of 2004. We had an amazing adventure, and these 4 images are all that remains of that day - though our own memories remain vivid. We walked from a small town high up on the western ridge of the peninsula (east of Vico), up over the ridge and down into Positano (map). Up, up we went, into the clouds, and came out on the other side to descend in a downpour that had the water flooding up over our ankles. We were drenched by the time we got back to civilization, but the restaurant where we stopped gave us towels and a blow-dryer. Unfortunately, the cab driver who took us back to our hotel went the long way around the peninsula and we ended up paying out the nose for it. Still, it's a day I'll never forget. If it hadn't been raining so hard, I'd have taken more pix!
Assisi, Italy - During my whirlwind tour of Italy in 2004, my friend Rebecca and I visited Assisi, the home of St. Francis. You can purchase little statues of the saint on any corner, including fat little caricatures of him, but that sort of kitsch fades quickly into the background once you're immersed in this ancient city. Built atop a hill in Umbria, Assisi provides a commanding view of the surrounding countryside. Its medieval structures and cobblestone streets charmed us.
Cinque Terre, Italy - I managed to visit the Cinque Terre twice during my time in Italy, once with Rebecca and again later with Jeff. The Cinque Terre (translated as "Five Lands") consists of 5 towns laid out in a string along the Italian Riviera. The people there have fought hard over the years to keep civilization at bay, maintaining pedestrian-only access via trains to most of them, and the trains are small local ones. I fell in love with the Cinque Terre. It was my second favorite place in Italy (the first being Lake Como).
Leavenworth, Washington - Some new friends and I spent the weekend at a beautiful lodge, playing cards, eating food, talking, laughing and sitting in the hot tub. The highlight of the weekend was the snowmobile trip.

2000

San Francisco, California - The Annual Gay Pride Parade cannot be accurately described with words. I traveled to San Fran to visit some friends, and while I was there, I joined the crowd of GLBTs, their friends and supporters of gay rights to cheer, hoot, and laugh until tears ran down our faces. I'd never seen anything like it. It was an extravaganza for the senses.
