Monsieur Debouché’s head landed on one cheek, facing the cabinet where Bernadette was hiding. Through the crack, Bernadette watched a tear run unbidden from the innermost corner of the head’s uppermost eye. The droplet eased down the slope of Debouché’s nose. It hovered on the ridge, afraid, trembling for the fall it knew had to come. A fat comet of blood came streaking from Debouché’s hairline, careless and panicked.
